We attended a defence industry update not so long ago and a gentleman sitting adjacent to us referred to the fact that often so-called local content in locally awarded projects has been subcontracted out to other parties over east or overseas and observed that there is a lack of local equipment and material suppliers. Another observation from the day was that a strong unified voice might assist in holding government and others accountable for controlling where the work goes. On the prospect of creating a unified voice with the view to seeing more real local content, we watch with keen interest as to where this might lead. As far as material supply goes, if that’s the impression of one person, I wonder how wide spread that is. You may already know that Specialty Metals is highly capable of tailoring a materials program to meet the particular needs of our customers. While we can’t do everything for everyone, we can certainly look at material requirements on request and carry the broadest range possible to meet those needs. We have always maintained that if somebody needs us to stock a certain material or product and there is a way for us to support them, we will do that. Doing everything we can to support our customers is good for their businesses and ours, and our company was formed 30 years ago based on that premise. Although it’s true we are limited in what we can source from Australia, and we do mostly buy and stock materials from overseas, we are very passionate about showcasing Australian and in particular, Western Australian products wherever possible. Prior to selling our plastics company a few years ago, we were proudly exporting the Western Australian-made Spiral Guard (hydraulic hose wrap) all around the world. If we had the opportunity to do the same with metal, we would be equally proud to do the same. Of course this isn’t easy with processing onshore so limited, so we do our best to support our local machinists, fabricators and universities and take our hats off to them when they get those opportunities. At least we had a small part in it. If you have any requirement outside of a “standard” scope of supply and you need to be able to have it when you need it, give the team at Specialty Metals a call today to discuss how we can best meet your needs.
