Expansion Alloys

What are controlled expansion alloys?

Alloys with controlled expansion characteristics are used for a broad variety of applications where thermal size change of the metal must be considered in component part design. Generally, these alloys expand when heated and contract when cooled.

Benefits of Controlled Expansion Alloys

The alloys in this family have been useful in applications requiring high magnetic permeability such as transformers, cores, laminations for very efficient motors, relays and solenoids.

Technical information

The alloys classified in this category are; low thermal, high thermal, glass and ceramic sealing types.

Low Thermal Expansion
Alloys which exhibit very low coefficients of thermal expansion (less than 1 to approximately 6 x 1061°F) within certain temperature ranges and have expansion characteristics

High Thermal Expansion
Alloys which exhibit expansion coefficients higher than those of carbon steel.

Glass and Ceramic Sealing
Alloys which possess approximately the same expansion coefficients as a given non-metallic material to which they will be matched.
